Eleven days ago I decided to give up eating meat. Not an easy decision for someone that has been known to demolish a whole chicken for lunch. I loved eating meat, all kinds….chicken, pork, lamb, goat, beef, beaver (sorry). I ate meat every day of my adult life (apart from a trial run of cutting it out last year). I would have bacon sandwiches for breakfast, a meat based dinner and maybe even meat in a sandwich for tea.

Why you may ask? Why give it up if I like it so much? Well, I’ve been feeling like crap for ages. Constant headache, ache all over and fatigue, my god the fatigue. Something needed to change. I’ve tried cutting out various things over the last few years, gluten being one of the main things. It made no difference. I’ve tried supplementing with every combination of vitamin and mineral you can think of. It made no difference.
I’ve tried napping through the day to boost energy, no difference. I’ve tried exercise, no difference. I’ve tried having a break from the gym, no difference. Sunshine, no difference. Just constantly feel drained, almost like I have a constant type of flu.
I met up with an old friend a couple of weeks ago. He looked good, no actually he looked great!! He looked younger than the last time I saw him (approximately 6 years ago). He had lost weight and had an “alive” glow about him. How? As we got talking I asked about his diet. He said “you’ll only take the pi@s”. He then told me he had become vegan a few years ago (I’m not ready for that yet due to my love of cheese), he also said he hadn’t drunk alcohol for a long time (also not ready to commit to that!!).
My friend also told me about a program he had watched on Netflix called ” the game changers”. I’ve always believed that the best source of protein (for my gym recovery), comes from either whey protein or eating meat. Watching this program changed my mind completely. It shows (among many other things) that the protein from these sources is second hand, its almost a by product of what they eat…..plants. The program also shows the effect eating meat has on your blood. This was the part that really stood out for me.
So, I have decided to just cut out eating meat. I am still eating fish and some dairy based products, although I am getting most of my nutrition from plants. I’ve bought some vegan protein powder and it tastes the same if not better than whey.
The “c” word
Why is this blog called the “c” word? Well today I ended my gym session with some cardio. I hate cardio with a passion. It’s not the physical side of it, it’s the after effect it has on me. I normally come home after cardio, shower and the have to sleep. It drains me even more than usual. Today was different, It gave me an energy rush. I felt good, really good. Is it the change in diet? Probably to early to say, but I’ll stick with it and update you.
