There’s a heaven above you baby

The season

It was the summer of 1991. I had just passed my driving test and I drove with two friends to the outskirts of London. We were heading to see Gun’s n’ roses.

The bands

They were supposed by the “Nine inch nails” and “Skid row”. I love all three of those bands. They were playing at the original Wembley stadium.

Shivers

All three bands were amazing. Gun’s n’ roses played one new song that made me shiver all over. I left the stadium not knowing what it was called.

Illusions

I had to wait a few weeks until use your illusion I and II were released. I bought them both on cassette and fast forwarded until I found the song I loved.

Overdose

The song was “Don’t cry”. The song features Axel Rose’s cousin Shannon Hoon, the former blind melon front man. Hoon died of a cocaine overdose in 1995.

The lyrics

Talk to me softly
There’s something in your eyes
Don’t hang your head in sorrow
And please don’t cry
I know how you feel inside I’ve
I’ve been there before
Somethin’ is changin’ inside you
And don’t you know

Don’t you cry tonight
I still love you baby
Don’t you cry tonight
Don’t you cry tonight
There’s a heaven above you baby
And don’t you cry tonight

Give me a whisper
And give me a sigh
Give me a kiss before you
Tell me goodbye
Don’t you take it so hard now
And please don’t take it so bad
I’ll still be thinkin’ of you
And the times we had… baby

And don’t you cry tonight
Don’t you cry tonight
Don’t you cry tonight
There’s a heaven above you baby
And don’t you cry tonight

And please remember that I never lied
And please remember
How I felt inside now honey
You gotta make it your own way
But you’ll be alright now sugar
You’ll feel better tomorrow
Come the morning light now baby

And don’t you cry tonight
And don’t you cry tonight
And don’t you cry tonight
There’s a heaven above you baby
And don’t you cry
Don’t you ever cry
Don’t you cry tonight
Baby maybe someday
Don’t you cry
Don’t you ever cry
Don’t you cry
Tonight
